As the last bits of snow melt away and your attentions turn to summer, the vacation you’re planning can’t come sooner. Deciding where to go and more importantly where to stay, will be the biggest decision you have to make.  If the fun and festivities planned this summer aren’t enough to lure you, some interesting facts about Ocean City should do it! Here are some things you may not have known about this beautiful place we call home.

OC aerial view

During the summer months, Ocean City becomes the second most populated town in Maryland! With between 320,000 – 345,000 visitors every weekend, there’s never a dull moment around here.

In 1869, a businessman named Isaac Coffin built the city’s first beach-front cottage that would accommodate paying guests. People were drawn to the beach, the fishing, and the relaxation that surrounded the area.

Before 1870, Ocean City was known as “The Ladies’ Resort to the Ocean,” as it was a leisurely place to relax and vacation.

The current Ocean City inlet was actually created by a rather ferocious hurricane back in 1933. While the hurricane left the town a mess, the inlet was kept as it was, and it soon became an important fishing port, both commercially and recreationally. Fish that were plentiful and caught here regularly were the billfish, tuna, and wahoo. In keeping with the fishing legacy, a tournament is held every year in August, where fishermen compete to catch the largest White or Blue Marlin, or Tuna. The prizes can go up to 1 million dollars! How’s that for an interesting fact about Ocean City! Remember to bring your fishing gear along if you’re coming in August.

Our famous Boardwalk is one of the central attractions in Ocean City, and attracts thousands of people every summer since it was first built in 1902. After years of wear and natural occurrences, it has had to have been rebuilt a few times. Currently, it is now back to its original length of almost 3 miles, and it is the main point of attraction to all the tourists coming in.

There is an anchor on the Boardwalk that was recovered from a sailboat that crashed off the Assateauge Island. The anchor weighs 2 and a half tons! The Sailboat Wreck happened all the way back in 1870, and the anchor still stands there today, as a memory of the Wreck.

Ocean City, the now bustling summer resort town, boasts more than 9,500 hotel rooms and 21,000 condominiums! With a variety of places to stay, you can choose between classic hotel rooms, rental apartments, cottages, or condominiums.

We hope you enjoyed these interesting facts about Ocean City, and are even more excited for your stay here. Whether you need a hotel room, or a service apartment, book your accommodation with Beach Plaza now. We can’t wait to see you here!

OC boardwalkPlanning a vacation is something that gets many of us through the drudgery of working life. For those of you who enjoy a fancier meal, Ocean City boasts some of the finest dining in the area, fit for your taste buds.

While researching for fun things to do in a new city or vacation destination, we sometimes get too excited by attractions and forget the most important (or at least some of us think so) part – the food! One of the greatest things about visiting new places is checking out the local fare and experiencing the taste of the town. We’ve shortlisted a few awesome restaurants in town that will have you even more amped up for your trip here. Take a look!

Phillips Seafood:shrimp and salad
Here, you have the option of choosing between their two locations – either the Seafood House or their Crab House, or both! Phillips has been voted Ocean City’s Best Seafood Restaurant, with a choice of a delicious all-you-can-eat menu, a la carte, or take-away. Some of their signature dishes that have patrons coming back from more are the Hoopers Island Crab Cakes, which are handmade using Shirley Phillip’s original recipe, the Stuffed Flounder, which is a mix of creamy crab and flakey flounder (yum!), and for those in the mood for a lot of variety, the Seafood Platter offers a great mix of different crustaceans and flavours. Phillips Seafood is a must-eat for when you are in Ocean City, and with their new online store, you can take a taste of Phillips home!

The Hobbit:
When walking up along the boardwalk, hunger is sure to strike. The Hobbit is a great little restaurant to satisfy your fishy cravings. Choose between delicious seafood options such as Lemon-Basil Encrusted Salmon or Stuffed Filet. If Phillips has seafooded you out, other options are available such as the Pan Roasted Duck Breast or Veal Pistachio. Top it off with some Coconut Custard Cake for dessert and that walk back to Beach Plaza will be well needed!

Dead Freddie’s Island Grill:
Who says fun has to be restricted to day activities? At Dead Freddie’s Island Grill, you’ll have the easiest time getting the kids to eat their meals. With a play area for the kids that includes a pirate ship, you can relax at nearby tables and enjoy some music, an outdoor bar and deck, and some non kid-friendly drinks! Their extensive menu includes great grub like quesadillas, burgers, tuna steak, and a little pirate’s menu for the children. Turn your average dinner time into play time for the whole family!

My Nature:vegan dish
For those of you who love a beachfront vacation and love the fruit of the sea even more, there’s a vegan restaurant just for you, and it’s conveniently located on our property! We offer raw, organic, and vegan salads and juices, with a daily raw food special. Things to look forward to include chia pudding, wild green juice, eggless egg salad, and carrot cake. We also offer a children’s choice menu where your little one’s can choose from a variety of healthy snacks and meals. Raw food is making a huge movement recently and we’ve outlined 40 reasons why you should hop on the bandwagon! Get some fresh air and some fresh fare at My Nature!

Are you hungry yet? We are! This list of fantastic OC Restaurants will be sure to put you in the vacation spirit. Contact us for bookings, questions, or help.
